The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment after being found guilty on all six charges brought against him.
The judgment was delivered on Monday, July 20, 2026, by Criminal Court 4 of the High Court, with Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay presiding. The court convicted Chairman Wontumi on all counts following the conclusion of the trial.
Chairman Wontumi, together with Akonta Mining Company Limited and a third accused, Kwame Antwi, stood trial over allegations of illegal mining activities on the company's concession at Samreboi in the Western Region.
According to the prosecution, the accused persons unlawfully assigned mineral rights on the concession without obtaining approval from the sector minister. They were also accused of facilitating mining operations without the necessary authorization, in violation of the Minerals and Mining Act.
The court found the accused guilty after considering the evidence presented during the trial and subsequently imposed the 20-year custodial sentence on Chairman Wontumi.
