Breaking: President Mahama Revokes Appointments of MMDCEs and Assembly Members

In a directive issued on January 8, 2025, from the Office of the President, key appointments across Ghana's local governance system have been revoked. The notice, signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, cited the provisions of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), as amended by the Local Governance (Amendment) Act, 2017 (Act 940), as the legal basis for the decision.

The revocation affects the Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), as well as Assembly Members appointed under the relevant sections of the Act.

In the interim, the respective Coordinating Directors of the various MMDAs have been directed to assume responsibilities as acting Chief Executives until substantive appointments are made.

This sweeping decision is expected to align with efforts to restructure and enhance the efficiency of local governance. The communication was addressed to the Chief Director of the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, with copies sent to the Vice President and Chief of Staff at Jubilee House.

Stay tuned for further developments on this unfolding story as the government initiates the next steps in the appointment process.
